My family has found some great new family fun. We have been meaning to try this for a year now and just never got around to doing it. Well we finally did and we had a blast doing it. It's geocaching!
It can be as simple or as complex of a hunt as you want. All it requires is a GPS, some good shoes, occasionally a pencil and a something small to trade if you wish to take an item from the container. We logged on to the website and entered our zip code. It pulls up a multitude of caches (treasures) in our area that people have hid. You can find them in town, out of town, and everywhere!
Once you select one it will tell you a little about what you are hunting for, sometimes a great story of something you can see while hunting for it and it might give you other neat information. They also list the most important part- the coordinates to where you will find the cache!
Then you are ready. Just enter the coordinates in the GPS and follow the arrow. It will get you pretty close to the item you are hunting for and then it's up to you to uncover it. This is the part the kids love! They are great hunters and you should see the excitement on their faces as they find it and get ready to open the container.
The items inside the containers are usually small (as it is more about the hunt than the treasure). We have found money, pocket knives, toys, little notes, recipes, painted rocks, a dvd, and numerous other small items. The deal is that you have to put something in the cache if you are going to take something out. Then you sign the log book inside the container with as little or much information about yourself as you want. Most people put where they are from as it is fun to see how far people have come to find them.
It is a great thing to do for some simple and inexpensive (won't be if the gas prices continue to rise) family fun. So if you haven't tried this I would recommend giving it a shot.
